Are you considering braces to achieve a beautifully straight smile? If so, you may be worried about the process, especially when it comes to how they feel, during and after your orthodontist places them. Thankfully, you can prepare yourself by enjoying some information about what you can expect when getting braces—there is no need to be nervous! Read on to learn what the treatment feels like and give yourself peace of mind.

Day 1 of Braces (Your Orthodontic Appointment)

Many assume that getting braces is painful, but you won’t feel any discomfort during the treatment process. While it’s possible that you may feel sore from keeping your mouth open for long intervals of time, the procedure is rather painless. First, your orthodontist will dry your teeth before applying glue. Next, they will attach metal brackets on the center of each tooth, bonding it to the glue. Lastly, wires are connected to each of the brackets on your smile.

The First Week of Braces

During the first few days especially of wearing braces, there is a slight adjustment period. You may experience an achy feeling in your teeth because they are beginning to move with low-grade, steady pressure from the wires. This discomfort isn’t anything serious, but it can be annoying at first. However, looking at the bright side, this sensation means that your braces are working!

If you need some relief, you can:

  • Take an over-the-counter analgesic you know you can tolerate.
  • Rinse with warm salt water.
  • Eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and more.
  • Avoid foods or drinks that are especially acidic.

After Each Visit to Your Orthodontist

Every time you see your orthodontist, adjustments are made to ensure that your teeth are moving into the proper position. These adjustments can cause some slight discomfort and soreness, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Plus, as time goes on, you’ll get used to wearing your braces and the soreness won’t affect you as much.

Your First 6 Months

Once you’ve reached a month of wearing braces, you’ll be pretty much acclimated to the treatment. However, after 6 months, you may even forget that you have them. Just remember to practice a good oral healthcare routine, including brushing and flossing. You should also avoid foods that are sticky, hard, or difficult to chew. Plus, keep up with any recommendations from your orthodontist like changing your elastics.

Braces don’t have to be something you worry about! Now that you know what to expect and how they feel, you can begin your treatment with confidence—your straight smile awaits.
