Palatal Expander Huntington
Promoting Proper Oral Development
The science of orthodontia involves more than just repositioning teeth. It involves efforts to make sure that all of the oral structures work harmoniously together. This optimizes function and reduces the risk of future health complications. In some cases, in order to help patients enjoy the best possible treatment outcomes, we recommend the use of an oral appliance known as a palatal expander. What Are Palatal Expanders?
A palatal expander is also known as a palate expander. It is a special orthodontic appliance that is meant to widen the upper jaw and expand the upper dental arch in order to promote proper development of the teeth and other oral structures. It works by placing gentle, sustained pressure on the two halves of the upper jaw, slowly moving them apart. This influences bone growth and can permanently expand the upper jaw. Successful use of a palatal expander can lower the risk of issues like overcrowded teeth, a misaligned bite, and other problems.
Palatal expanders are typically used during childhood, when they can most effectively influence bone development. In rare cases, they are used on teens and adults, but this requires a more complex treatment process.
How Are Palatal Expanders Placed?
The best age to start treatment with a palatal expander is usually when a patient is 7 – 8 years old. If your child is around that age and has not yet completed an orthodontic evaluation, time is of the essence!
If Dr. Justyna and our team determine that a palatal expander is appropriate for your child, we will decide which type of device is best for them. Some patients benefit most from a removable expander, which looks similar to a retainer. These usually used when only minor adjustments to the palate are required. A rapid palatal expander is bonded onto the back teeth. It has a tiny screw that should be rotated with a special key in order to continually affect the jaw’s growth over time.
Most kids need to use a palatal expander for 3 – 6 months for the best results.
Caring for a Palatal Expander
These tips can equip you to help your child take excellent care of their palate expander:
- Encourage thorough oral hygiene habits. Regular brushing and flossing can prevent plaque buildup on the expander. If the appliance is removable, it should be taken out of the mouth regularly so it can be thoroughly cleaned.
- Watch your child’s eating habits. Hard, chewy, and sticky foods could damage a fixed palatal expander. Things like caramels, chewing gum, and hard candies should be avoided.
- Provide emotional support. Reassure your child that any mild soreness they notice is normal. Soft foods can help during the adjustment process.
- Take your child to follow-up appointments. Our team will monitor their progress and check to make sure the expander is doing its job.
