After you’ve completed your orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will typically prescribe a retainer to wear. Your teeth look perfectly fine, so why is this necessary? Continue reading to discover 3 reasons why it’s so important to wear a retainer to ensure your smile stays in-tact!

Reason #1 – To Prevent Relapse

When you undergo orthodontic treatment, force is applied to the teeth to move them to the correct position. While they will align over time, they are still subject to regressing after your treatment is done. That’s because bone matter has to develop around the base of your teeth to solidify their new position. Wearing a retainer allows the time for this natural process to occur.

Reason #2 – To Get More Value from Your Investment

Because dental insurance will only cover a portion of your orthodontic treatment, you’ll still have an out-of-pocket expense. The less time you spend undergoing treatment, the more money you can keep in your pocket. By adhering to your orthodontist’s guidelines of wearing a retainer, you won’t have to repeat your orthodontic treatment.

Reason #3 – To Maintain a Functional Bite

Having a straight set of teeth plays a significant role in maintaining excellent oral health. By wearing a retainer as prescribed, you can better perform dental hygiene (brushing and flossing) to prevent bacteria and plaque accumulation. The maintenance of healthy teeth and gums is one of the most important reasons to wear a retainer.

The Types of Retainers Available

Because all patients are different, most orthodontists will offer retainer options. One of the following may be used to protect your smile:

  • Removable retainers – Made to fit tightly into place over your teeth and to keep them safely in their properly aligned position
  • Fixed retainers – Especially helpful for patients who had a space between their upper front teeth or those who would otherwise struggle with compliance

The amount of time that a retainer is worn is determined by your specific smile needs and your orthodontist’s recommendation. While some patients may be instructed to wear a retainer every day for up to 4 months, others may be prescribed a period of 12 months. In some cases, the orthodontist may suggest wearing a retainer before going to bed for the rest of your life.

When you’ve worked hard to achieve a smile that looks and functions as it should, the last thing you want is to revert back to where you used to be. By adhering to your retainer guidelines, you’ll have a beautiful and healthy smile well into the future!
