Braces are a common way to fix bite problems, gaps, and alignment issues. As beneficial as this treatment is when it comes to improving both the look and the function of one’s smile, braces are notorious for having a long list of foods you have to avoid. Popcorn, gum, and other treats need to be avoided when wearing braces since they can lead to complications. The list of foods you shouldn’t eat can make the holidays a bit difficult, so what should you have instead? Read on to learn why it’s so important to clean your teeth, what to avoid, and braces-friendly foods for the holidays.

Why It’s Important to Keep Your Braces Clean

Braces are composed of wires and brackets that block food from naturally escaping your teeth. If the food stays there, this will allow bacteria in the mouth to feed on it. Those bacteria will then release acids that will weaken your enamel and make you more likely to develop cavities. This is why it’s so important that you take the time to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth. These food bits interact with the natural bacteria in your mouth and can cause plaque buildup and decay.

Common Holiday Foods to Avoid with Braces

Certain foods can damage your braces or be difficult to remove, but it also depends on how you eat them. For example, chewing with the wrong teeth may lead to damage. There are several holiday foods that you shouldn’t eat if you have braces, such as:

  • Toffee and other chewy or sticky candies
  • Meats on the bone, such as turkey legs
  • Raw carrots and other hard veggies
  • Nuts or foods with nuts in them
  • Hard gingerbread cookies
  • Caramel or candy apples
  • Hard candies

What to Eat Instead

Though there are several foods that you need to exclude from your diet when wearing braces, there are still a list of holiday treats that you can enjoy. Some braces-friendly foods that you can fill your plate with this holiday season include:

  • Tender turkey and other meats or fish off the bone
  • Soft desserts like cake, cookies, and pie
  • Soft breads like rolls or cornbread
  • Cooked vegetables
  • Corn off the cob
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Pasta or rice
  • Stuffing
  • Soup
  • Dips

One of the best parts of the holidays is the food. Though there are some adjustments that need to be made when it comes to braces-friendly foods, it’s still possible to eat to your heart’s content and enjoy the holiday season to the fullest!
